Recent
Interview with an Economist Graduated from Yale Univ.
Recently,
I sat down and interviewed David Pardo
about the state of the nation. David is a Yale graduate and
currently teaching for the University of Phoenix,Seattle. Per
David, currently our country is moving toward a police state.
The American economy is in trouble not so much from a possible
oncoming depression but more from a basic ideological rift
between the Republicans and the Democrats. Without a bipartisan
philosophy the US can only expect more government interference
in the economy. The question that Americans should be asking
their government is, "How can egoistical wants be satisfied
efficiently in a free market democracy over the long term?"
Those wants, in part determined by social norms, need not
necessarily be utilitarian as economists would have us believe.
The answer to this question should be, "Provide everyone with an
economic stake in the political economic system, in other
words, people's capitalism". But, this should not have been done
a la Bush.
Aligning
people's values need not constrict diversity, but it does
require some redistribution. The issue of redistribution always
opens up a Pandora's box and provides the industry of
demagoguery with a very comfortable living.
What
practical measures to take? David suggested some.
-
Regulate illegal immigration, particularly since without
it, there is no reason for a community in the first place.
-
Introduce restricted personal social security accounts which
would have the effect of tying political preferences to the
health and stability of the economy.
-
Strengthen equal opportunity laws and enforcement,
particularly for women.
-
Increase job networks & work contacts for the "poor".
-
Introduce a negative capital tax with a separate progressive
income tax. David who published a paper about this says that
this is a very novel idea. In fact, he is working on a
second paper about it. Interestingly, depending upon how it
is implemented, the tax could cut down on the alarming size
of the world population!
-
Redirect university subsidies into a high school voucher
system.
-
Define
strictly what a "key" sector is and regulate appropriately.
-
Eliminate unjustified corporate subsidies such as in
agribusiness and in oil protected by a dangerously overgrown
military.
-
Tighten Estate Taxes for the "rich"
-
Introduce parental training & a basic standardized personal
finance test that would require a pass mandatory for a high
school and/or college degree.
David says measures such as these could go a long way to
alleviating the bitter ideological conflict between the
Republicans and the Democrats and setting the strategic social
course for America in the years to come. "Of course, there are
probably other things that could be done—but the objective is
certain". If you would like to contact David, you can email your
comments to
refertheanh@gmail.com, and I will
forward it to David.

Northwest Asian Weekly

As a young man who struggled with his Asian identity and
self-esteem, I grew up in American mainstream culture where
hip-hop and brand names distracted me away from my origins.
Today, I am very thankful to my father, Vien, who required me to
attend a Vietnamese Catholic youth group and required that our
family spent a lot of time in Little Saigon. Without this, I
would not have known where to return as an adult.
The friends that I thought were my brothers died from gun
violence. Another committed suicide. Marcel and Angel never made
it to the age of 26. I am here because of my father's decisions.
Little Saigon and the International District used to be places
that I passed by in my teenage years. Now it's my favorite
hangout spot when it comes to good low-cost meals and seeing the
many different faces. Because of places like this one, I was
able to continually practice my Vietnamese and stayed in touch
with my community. It is never too late to do this.
During a recent interview with Mr. Randy Bosley, the minority
business owner of Pacific Northwest Bail Bonding, I found out
that history is about to repeat itself again. Mr. Bosley shared
his experiences with the displacement of the African Americans
from the Central District. Mr. Bosley said that Little Saigon's
fate in the Livable South Downtown Initiative is very much like
the hidden eviction process of African Americans from the
Central District.
Mr. Bosley said that the destruction of his district was a
result of private developers wanting to profit. The private
developers used all kind of dirty tactics to buy and develop
properties. They forced changes in both culture and diversity
and created a very unfriendly environment, which forced property
owners to let go of their holdings.
So what should be done?
The International Youth Ambassadors, a group for which I'm a
cultivator of, has awakened and gained support from the
Vietnamese seniors, a NW Vietnamese newspaper (Nguoi Viet Tay
Bac) and Vietnamese community leaders.
At a community gathering, Dr. Xuan Dung Nguyen said to me that
it is sad for him to see that young people are nowhere to be
found in community activism. It is a painful for him to see
elders finish raising young people who have matured into their
talents but who do not have an interest in participating in
intergenerational activism.
I also truly believe that we need a documentary film crew to
capture the true story of this community and the displacement of
the refugees who built the Little Saigon Business District from
the ground up. There are many tearful stories that need to be
shared. There are politicians' hearts that need to be warmed up,
and there is a need for the young people to acknowledge what
will happen to their future.
Little Saigon is a great place to find fresh produce and food at
low prices. This is not only a matter of affordability, but
justice for the poor. Little Saigon is also surrounded by
quality public services: transportation and health care.
Sustainability will equal greater improvement. Help us to save
our neighborhood.
